We live in the middle of a meadow, it’s my favorite place on earth. In the winter we ice fish on the pond and come warm nights we set up our “pond house” for backyard bbq’s and watching movies under the stars. Today I want to share our favorite campfire treat, naan bread with brown sugar butter. It’s better then s’mores and will make you famous at summer parties. So try them this weekend or very very soon!
Naan Bread
serves around 6 people, easy to double for more
1/2 package of active dry yeast
1/2 cup warm water
2 tablespoons of sugar
1 small egg
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon kosher salt
2 1/2 cups bread flour
grape seed or olive oil for grilling
Dissolve yeast in warm water with sugar for 10 minutes in small bowl. Beat egg in large bowl and add milk, salt and bread flour. When yeast mixture is ready add it into the large bowl and start mixing. At this point you can either use a stand mixer or when the dough comes together start kneading. Adding more flour or water to get a soft dough, around 5-8 minties. Put dough into a well oiled bowl and place a towel over to rise. This takes around 1- 1 1/2 hours. In the meantime make the brown sugar butter.
Brown Sugar Butter
1 stick room temperature butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
Mix all of the ingredients in small container and when well combined place in the refrigerator. This lasts for 3 weeks and can be used on toast or is the best butter for popcorn.
Back to the dough. When it’s done rising, push dough down and start taking small bits of dough to roll into 1 1/2 inch balls. Place on a cookie sheet and let rise again for 30 minutes. Start grill, clean and oil grates for cooking. Grill side take dough and shape into thin circles. Brush with oil and place on grill. When they puff up turn over and wait for other side. Each side take around 2 to 3 minutes. At this point you can either keep some for your meal like we do or make all of them into sweet treats by brushing the brown butter directly on them when finished grilling.
Fun Extra’s!!
We grill aromatic lamb meatballs and serve them with cucumbers, tomatoes and tzatziki dip. Then for dessert we cover the last 5 or 6 with brown sugar butter.
And some nighttime summer music…
for dancing Devendra Banhart – Santa Maria Da Feira. I have no idea what he is sing about but his voice goes beyond the limits of language. Also he’s wearing rainbow suspenders in the video.
for driving Firekites – By Night. Such a great band and there song is perfect for driving in the night with the windows down. Or at the least makes you feel a tiny bit free sitting at your office desk.
for dreaming Ari Hest – Cranberry Lake. I’m pretty sure this song is about our pond, just change the title to Cranberry Pond. 1:12-1:23 is my favorite moment.

The feel of these images is wonderful…beautiful :)
Clary, these are like a dream. I love the nighttime images. What fun memories!
This is beyond sweet, Clary! Your kids are clearly having a wonderful, loving childhood. (And after trying your fabulous CCC recipe, I’ll definitely be making this soon!)
These images are so lovely. Your kids are so lucky to have adventures like these right in their own backyard :)
Oh my goodness, Clary! You live in a style shoot and it is AMAZING! Love everything about everything happening in all of these images…xx
Megan!! So thought of you when putting this together because you asked about recipes awhile back(:
Oh my word. I want to move in…this is amazing! And I have never though to put brown sugar butter on naan bread before. Yum!
i’m sorry, is this from the set of a movie?! so GORGEOUS! ps, we have the same hunters :)
Simply beautiful and you can just feel the love of family in these images.
Such great memories for your kids to experience. You seriously are my idol in so many aspects of life. The night shots are swoon worthy. Love this post.
If there were a magazine titled “Cutest Families” yours would for sure be the most featured :) I love these images…you are such an amazing artist :)
Whaaaat?! It’s like cuteness exploded in every image, soooo precious Clary!! :)
You’re the coolest family eeeeverrr! Someday, when Jettie and Hughes are looking back at these, there’s no doubt they will be thankful for having such imaginative and loving parents! p.s. submit these to Martha Stewart Living.
Amazing!! this reminds me of a Wes Anderson movie. Charming and highly stylized with a sense of quirk.
For real Clary? I want to be your kid and live there!
Can I come be a child in your backyard? MAGICAL.
So much awesomeness in this post, Clary! Your eye for beautiful images never ceases to amaze me and you obviously have impeccable taste in design: from the cushions to the tent (so cool! Where did you find that?) to the spoons and the jars! It is like you carefully placed each grill mark on the naan! Posts like this make this city girl long for the country. Xoxo.
Oh, Miss Clary! This looks like paradise! I grew up out there in the country (out by St. James Drive) not far from you- it was a childhood dream. Hughes and Jettie are so lucky and it’s wonderful that you are capturing these times on camera- but of course you are! AWESOME.
You guys are ridiculously awesome. This looks like a storybook evening.
out of control. i work with gorillas and i’m not this cool. love especially the candlelight fish pic of hughes and travis. so all together lovely. i’m jealous!
What a magical childhood you are creating for Hughes and Jettie! Random question, but from where did the tiny doll come? I have a feeling Mia would love one.
Thanks Nicki!! Mia would love one, they’re custom made to look like them and super soft, she even put “Jettie” on the doll. http://www.sophieandlili.com/
Can I come live in your summer house? It looks totally dreamy :)
Love the pics of a little Clary and Travis! Such a sweet little family you are. Also…I LOVE the Firekites…we really are music soul mates my friend.
Un-be-freaking-lievable. I swear, you live in a different stratosphere, Clary! Everything you touch looks amazing–I really don’t know how you do it. I have relooked at this post multiple times just to be awed by it all–the colors, the activities, the food (hello, lamb meatballs and homemade naan…brilliant move on the brown sugar butter…brilliant, I tell you!), the family. You are one in a million, and this photo shoot has to be one of my favorites. I am DYING over that yellow and grey fabric, and your tent, and the Aranciata…I am a limonata girl, but seriously, this is just awe-inspiring. Oh, and the cute little glass containers for the tomatoes and cukes and tzatziki?! I DIE!!!!!!!!
This post makes me undeniably happy–have a great week, and thanks for making so many of us smile with your art. And your cute fam. :)
=) Simply wonderful!
Am thinking of making these this weekend…thanks for the great recipes and ideas! My mouth is watering, just thinking of it all. You are the best, Clary!
This is your property? It’s gorgeous. I didn’t know you lived in the country. Such a special location you have.
It is a special place, thank you Jenny:) xo
